Wedding at St Ouens Bay, Jersey

Last weekend we had a lot of fun setting up for a wedding in St Ouens Jersey. The wedding was in a Marquee in a field, overlooking St Ouens bay towards L’Etacq. One of my favourite parts of Jersey. What an amazing place for a wedding. The brief for this wedding was as exciting as the view; Natural, Fluffy, and Colourful. So we went for dark purple Hydrangea, orange and fuchsia Roses and yellow Sunflowers all mixed with other wild flowers and grasses. The star of the show (second only to the beautiful Bride Sophie!)  was a large Marquee centre ring. To the Bridal bouquet we add ...Read More

Mondial Roses

Mondial- my Favourite Rose The Mondial rose originates form a German Nursery, but the name comes from the French for ‘Peace’. It is now grown all over the world. But Mondials for floristry are mainly grown in Holland and Ecuador. The Rose belongs to the large headed variety which can be up to 10cm in diameter when open, with up to 30 petals making up the bloom. The petals themself have a graceful wavy edge. All this is reminiscent of an old English garden rose. The cut flower rose has no scent but lasts very well and with little or no thorns makes it a delight to use in florist ...Read More

Sunflowers

Sunflowers are back in stock at Arabella’s. Why not have a look at our website and some of the bouquets we do. Unfortunately they are not Jersey grown yet but as soon as they become available we will use them. How can you not love a Sunflower? With their large blooms, beautiful range of colours of yellows, oranges and reds and their sunny disposition?? Their Latin name is ’’ Helianthus’’ which comes from the Greek words for Sun and Flower. But what else could they possibly be called? Not only do they look like the Sun but the flower heads will track the sun duri ...Read More

The Jersey Collection

We Have Launched our Jersey Collection, why not have a look and let me know what you think! Living and working on the beautiful Island of Jersey in the Channel Islands, you can not help being inspired by its natural beauty. I am not just talking about the islands landscape. Mother-nature is constantly changing the islands image with its many weather changes. You go to a beach one day and could be mistaken for thinking you are on a tropical island in the pacific, go to that same beach the next day and a storm coming in from the Atlantic will have changed the beach into the likes of the Arctic ...Read More

Frizzle Sizzle plant (Albuca spiralus)

Would you like something a little different? Then how about a Frizzle Sizzle Plant? Yup that’s its name! This plant is a succulent that comes from south Africa and is actually a bulb. What gives it its name are the unusual leaves, they are kind of Fuzzily Sizzily or Curly Worley. The plant also flowers. In summer flower stalks appear, growing about 25cm in height and they produce Yellow bells with a sweet vanilla scent. Plant Care: The Plant like a warm sunny spot and like all succulents it does not like to be over watered. Let the soil dry out a little between watering. When the fl ...Read More

How to keep your Fresh Flowers fresh

Most Fresh Flower Bouquets that you buy from a florist nowadays come in water. We call them Aqua Packs. That is, the flower stems are wrapped in cellophane and then water is poured into the bubble. The flowers are then placed into a bag or box which will keep the bouquet upright.    Aqua Pack Bouquet The great thing about this method is that the flowers remain in water at all times, unlike the traditional Bouquets where the flowers were arranged flat, the stems would start to dry out from the moment the florist began arranging them. That is ok for a few hours, as long as the stems ...Read More

Should you talk to your plants?

Now please stop laughing, after all King Charles is said to talk to his plants……… I don’t know about you but I talk to my dogs and sometimes I think they even listen to what I say but if nothing else it makes me feel good. Sooo why not our plants? We buy plants and keep them inside because they brighten up our homes, they look nice and they make us feel good. But plants have other uses too. Did you know that they can get rid of harmful chemicals by absorbing such as formaldehyde, xylene and toluene? Saying that you would need a lot of plants in your home to make a ...Read More

How to care for your Cactus

Cacti come from the desert regions of America and because of that they are all succulent plants, which means they store water in their leaves and trunks. Because of this they are ideal as houseplants in the modern central heated home- Hot and Dry. They do need a lot of light and little water. The quickest way to kill a cactus is by over watering. If in doubt DO NOT WATER! Having said that they do need some water and if you get the watering right they will reward you with beautiful flowers. Yes all cacti flower, some more readily than others but only on new growth. Watering: Hardly water ...Read More

Phalaenopsis Care

Commen Name: Moth Orchid Origin and Features The Phalaenopsis orchid comes from the tropical regions of South-East Asia. They are Epiphytic plants, which means they grow on the surface of other plants but they do not invade these plants. The Phalaenopsis orchid grows in tree branches and takes its water and nutrients from the air. These orchids have long thick silver roots which dangle in the moist tropical air. As not many people have trees in their homes we need to put them into pots. So the first rule of care is, do not cut off roots that grow outside the pot. Growing Conditions Phal ...Read More

Hi Everyone and welcome to Arabella’s blog.

I like to use this page to up-date you on any news we have but also to use it for information, especially about plant care.  I have been in the Horticultural business for over 25 years. My interest in gardening started with watching my Dad in the garden. Not only did he grow all our vegetables but the garden itself was in multicoloured bloom all year round. I graduated from Oaklands with an HND in Land Based Technology and worked as a Houseplant Supervisor/Manager for several Garden Centres before becoming a Buyer. Along the way I picked up quite a few tricks of the trade from the peop ...Read More

Basics Housplant Maintenance

Most houseplants are tropical plants. In their home country they live outside but in our climate they need to be inside, mainly for warmth. The two questions I get asked most often are:   1. How much light/sun does the plant need? Neither answers, are the same for every plant or every household. But no plant likes to stand close to a window and have the sun beating down on it all day long, even Cacti will die there. Why??? Cacti after all are dessert plants!! The window glass acts as magnifier and will burn the plant, so allow some distance between the plant and glass. Some plants c ...Read More
