Happy Easter from Flowers by Arabella

How to keep your Fresh Flowers fresh

Most Fresh Flower Bouquets that you buy from a florist nowadays come in water. We call them Aqua Packs. That is, the flower stems are wrapped in cellophane and then water is poured into the bubble. The flowers are then placed into a bag or box which will keep the bouquet upright.

The great thing about this method is that the flowers remain in water at all times, unlike the traditional Bouquets where the flowers were arranged flat, the stems would start to dry out from the moment the florist began arranging them. That is ok for a few hours, as long as the stems are then cut before being placed into a vase. But the longer these flowers are out of water, wilting will start and the flowers will die.

  Traditional Bouquet

Once flower stems are out of water they start healing over to stop water evaporating from the open bottom of the stem, just as our skin does when we cut ourselves. But if these stems are then not re-cut before being placed into fresh water, they can not take up the water, as the ends are sealed. So always cut stems (about 1 inch) before placing into water. Also cut them when replacing the water, which should happen every 2 days. This will stop bacteria growth and stops the stems from rotting and the flowers will last longer. At Arabella’s Flowers we will also add a sachet of flower food to the box. Add this to the fresh water when placing the flowers into a vase. It is a water conditioner that helps prevent bacteria growth.

All Bouquets that are delivered in an Aqua pack should be placed into a fresh Vase (inc the conditioner) after two days.

Now Enjoy!
