How to care for your Cactus28 April 2020 Cacti come from the desert regions of America and because of that they are all succulent plants, which means they store water in their leaves and trunks. Because of this they are ideal as houseplants in the modern central heated home- Hot and Dry. They do need a lot of light and little water. The quickest way to kill a cactus is by over watering. If in doubt DO NOT WATER! Having said that they do need some water and if you get the watering right they will reward you with beautiful flowers. Yes all cacti flower, some more readily than others but only on new growth. Watering: Hardly water at all during the winter. In spring increase watering to moderately but never leave it standing in water. Add a little feed to the spring watering and new growth should appear on which flowers may develop. Repotting: Do not re-pot into a pot that is to large, one size up is enough. Cacti prefer to be root bound. Make sure you use cacti soil. Ordinary potting compost will hold on to much water and your cactus will die. To lift a prickly cactus, fold some news paper several times so that you can loop it around the plant and thus lift it. If you do end up with spikes in your fingers, use tweezers for the large ones and sticky tape for the finer ones.
